the bed and glared at the man she had shepherded through the elaborate scheme. "I can't believe he's shown up after all these years and doesn't want something. You're missing something."
"What's to miss?" he asked. "It's a god-damn, stupid jar, nothing more."
"Tell me this," she insisted, "exactly what was it he thought this present was going to do when he put it there?"
Theodore was resigning himself to the fact that he wasn't likely to get any sleep until his wife's morbid curiosity was satisfied. He pushed himself into a sitting position with his hands folded behind his head and propped himself against the headboard. "That's what I've been trying to tell you all along. The whole thing is strange. Even more, it's downright weird." Then as an afterthought, he added, "Know what I really think? I think Charlie actually believes that jar has some kind of magical power that will bring old Malcolm back to life."
Betty Elizabeth's already white face somehow managed to turn even whiter. The frown was gone. She got up, walked over to her ornate dresser, opened the top drawer and rummaged around until she found her pack of cigarettes. That was the giveaway, the indication of how upset she actually was.
